1-Step Audio Publisher tutorial by Cathy Anne Murtha The 1-Step Audio Publisher allows you the convenience of voice mail combined with the luxury of audio streaming on the Internet. Voice mail will allow you to send actual voice messages to other 1-Step Audio Publisher users. The audio streaming feature of the 1-Step Audio Publisher will allow you to hear sound directly from web sites on the Internet. In this tutorial, we will explore all the options available to you in the program. From sending voice mail to creating sound files for personal and professional use, 1-Step Audio Publisher is a versatile tool which promises to revolutionize the Internet, one voice at a time. General Information You will notice the use of some hot keys in this tutorial. These hot keys are shortcuts to accessing a variety of options from within the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. If a hot key begins with a function key, for example F2 (Function key 2) this shortcut may be used from anywhere within the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. If the hot key consists of a single letter, it may be accessed from within the appropriate menus. To access a menu, you have two options: you may activate the menu bar with the alt key and cursor back and forth through the menu choices with the right and left cursor keys. By pressing the return key or the down cursor key, your selected menu will be opened. Your other choice is to use the hot key associated with the menu. For example alt-f will open the file menu in most all windows applications. These hot keys will be offered and the uses explained in detail within this tutorial. File Menu The file menu contains three options two of these options will help you manipulate sound files and the third will close the program. The options which are available from within the file menu include: Open, F2, This option will allow you to open a previously saved 1-Step Audio Publisher file on your computer. All 1-Step Audio files end with a .gsm extension and, for your convenience, there are several files included in the installation program of your 1-Step Audio Publisher. Upon selecting this option, your cursor will be placed in an edit box. You may input the path to your file in this box. Be sure to use the entire path such as C:\program files\audio-tips\1- step\intro.gsm. Press enter to load the file into the 1-Step Audio Publisher. You may also select a file through the selection boxes which are available within the "open File" dialogue box. These options will be available through the use of the tab key (each touch of the tab key will move you through the various options) or through the use of the appropriate hot key. You may: ** Enter a file name, alt-m, This edit field is available to input the path of the file which you would like to open. Pressing the tab key once more from this edit box will allow you to cursor through the sound files which are available in the currently selected directory. ** Folders, alt-f, This option will allow you to select a new folder from which to choose a GSM formatted file. The folders which are available will be displayed in the edit box, simply cursor to your choice and press the enter key to open the folder. The GSM files which may reside within your selected directory will be displayed in the "File Name," alt-f edit field. **List Files of Type, alt-t, This option will allow you to select the type of files you would like to peruse. The 1-Step Audio publisher can play a variety of files which may be stored on your hard drive. Everything from WAV format to "True Speech" can be accessed by the 1-Step Audio Publisher. Use the up and down cursor keys to explore the variety of files which 1-Step can access. Pressing enter will finalize the selection in this edit box. **Drives, alt-v, This option will allow you to open a new drive within the "Open" feature of the 1-Step Audio Publisher. The folders will be displayed in the "Folders, alt-f" portion of the dialogue box. OK button, this option will finalize your file selection and open the file within the 1-Step Audio Publisher. Cancel, this option will cancel the opening of any file in the 1-Step Audio Publisher. Save As, alt-a, Within the file menu, you may save a newly created sound file, or an edited file. on your computer. Upon selecting this option, your cursor will be placed in an edit box. You may input the path to which you would like to save your file in this box. Be sure to use the entire path such as C:audio\new.gsm. Press enter to save the file to your drive. You may also select a file to overwrite through the selection boxes which are available within the "Save File As" dialogue box. These options will be available through the use of the tab key (each touch of the tab key will move you through the various options) or through the use of the appropriate hot key. You may: ** Enter a file name, alt-m, This edit field is available to input the path of the file which you would like to save. Pressing the tab key once more from this edit box will allow you to cursor through the sound files which are available in the currently selected directory. Selecting one of these files and pressing enter will prompt an overwrite of the selected file. ** Folders, alt-f, This option will allow you to select a new folder in which to save your file. The folders which are available will be displayed in the edit box, simply cursor to your choice and press the enter key to open the folder. The GSM files which may reside within your selected directory will be displayed in the "File Name," alt-f edit field. **List Files of Type, alt-t, This option will display the type of file to which your recording will be saved. **Drives, alt-v, This option will allow you to open a new drive within the "Open" feature of the 1-Step Audio Publisher. The folders will be displayed in the "Folders, alt-f" portion of the dialogue box. OK button, this option will finalize your file selection and save the file to your designated location. Cancel, this option will cancel the saving of the file in the 1-Step Audio Publisher. Exit, alt-F4, This option, from within the file menu, will close the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. Play Menu The Play menu, alt-p, allows you to navigate through a file which is currently being played by the 1-Step Audio Publisher as well as record audio files within the Publisher. These options include: Rewind, page-up, This option will return the player to the currently accessed file. Pause, alt-space bar, This option will pause the currently accessed file. Stop, space, This will stop the play of the currently accessed file. Play, return, This option will play the currently loaded file and continue play after the pause/stop option is accessed. Record, control-space bar, This will initiate the recording of a sound file. Simply start talking into your microphone. Once you have completed the recording press the space bar to stop the recording function. If you should decide to record over a previously recorded file, in essence discarding the old file, be sure to press the page up key to return to the beginning of the file, otherwise you may end up appending to the currently accessed file. Record From, alt-control-space bar, This option will allow you to record from the current location of the cursor, if the cursor is in the middle of the file, that is where the recording will be appended, if it is at the end the recording will be appended at the end, etc... Forward, page down, This option will move you forward in the currently accessed sound file. Voice Mail The Voice Mail Menu, alt-v, allows you to create voice mail, access your voice mail address book as well as create and send voice mail files to other 1-Step Audio Publisher users on the Internet. The options in this menu include: Voice Mailbox, F3, This option will open your voice mailbox. Any voice mail messages received by the 1-Step Audio Publisher will be placed in this mailbox. Once you access this option, you will be able to use your cursor key to move up and down through the messages and press the enter key to play the message of your choice. To toggle between the Voice Mail Box and the main 1-Step Audio window, use the alt-F6 hot key combination. Get Voice Mail, F4, This option will initiate a voice mail download from your server. Any voice mail messages on your server will be downloaded to your voice mail box, the remainder of your mail will be left intact for download by a mainstream mail program. Mail Voice file, F5, This option will allow you to send a previously created file to an e-mail address. Simply press the tab key once after accessing your address book and input the e-mail address to which you would like to send the sound file. New Voice Mail, F6, This option will allow you to record a new voice mail and send it to a 1- Step Audio Publisher user on the Internet. Simply press the F6 hot key, speak your message into your microphone, and use the space bar to end the recording. The 1-Step address book will appear. You may select an alias to which to send the voice mail, or press the tab key once and type in the address of the individual to whom you would like to send the file. Pressing enter after inputting the address will initiate the sending of the file. A little cricket sound will alert you to the fact that the message has been successfully uploaded to your intended recipient. Address Book, F12, This option will open the 1-Step Audio Publisher Address Book feature. To access the addresses currently available in the address book, simply use your cursor key. When your cursor lights upon the individual to whom you would like to send the message, simply press enter to initiate the sending of the file. If you do not have an alias created for an individual, this is easily accomplished via the file menu of the Address Book. You may also input an address manually by using the tab key once and typing the address into the edit field. To toggle between the Address Book window and 1-Step Audio window, use the alt-F6 hot key combination. Within the file menu of the address book, alt-f, you will have the following options New, Control-n, This option will open a dialogue box. Simply enter the alias for the e-mail address you would like to add to your address book, press the tab key once, and enter the e-mail address of the individual. The alias will become available in the selection box of the 1-Step Audio Publisher Address Book. In the future, you will simply be able to press enter on the name and the file will be uploaded to your intended recipient. Delete, delete key, This option will delete the currently selected alias in your address book. Close, Escape, This option will close the 1-Step Audio Publisher Address Book. Setup Menu The Setup Menu, alt-s, will allow you to customize your 1-Step Audio Publisher. Not only will you be able to designate the criteria 1-Step will observe when streaming files to your computer, but you will also be offered the opportunity to configure your 1-Step Audio Publisher to receive voice mail from other 1-Step Audio Publisher users. Upon entering the Setup Menu, there will be two options available to you. Options, o or F7 Voice Mail Setup, v or F8 We will now explore each of these options in detail. Options, o or F7, Selecting "Options" will open a dialogue box which will allow you to customize the 1-Step Audio Publisher. The following options are at your disposal and available through the use of the tab key. Streaming Audio Buffer Size, By default, your cursor will be placed in this edit box. You may specify the number of seconds which 1-Step will download to your computer, this buffer allows for smooth processing of an audio file. By default, the size of the buffer is set to 4 seconds. Recording format, The 1-Step Audio Publisher can record in three different formats. GSM is the most compact of all these settings. The other options include: AU and WAV formats. The WAV and AU formats should only be used on computers which cannot record in GSM format. The WAV and AU files will be larger and take longer to compress and you will not get any better quality from these other formats when sending voice mail Display Units, ,Bytes, Samples, Seconds. Always on Top, alt-a, This option will instruct the 1-Step Audio Publisher to always remain on top of other open applications. Skip Save on Exit, This option will allow you to exit the 1-Step Audio Publisher without being nagged to save the file which you may have just created. In addition, you will be able to record over a file which you feel is of inferior quality without being nagged to save the file. OK, This option will save your settings and you will be returned to the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. This option may be activated with the space bar or enter key. Cancel, This option will abandon your changes and return you to the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. This option may be activated with the space bar or enter key. Voice Mail Setup, v or F8, This option will allow you to configure 1-Step to download voice mail from your server. The following edit boxes must be filled in with the appropriate information. If you are not sure of any of the following, please contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) for the appropriate information. If you encounter problems downloading voice mail, it is most likely due to incorrect information in one of the following edit fields. These options may be accessed through the use of the tab key. Outgoing mail SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) Server. Incoming mail POP (Post Office Protocol) Server POP User Name (Your e-mail address) POP User Password (This is your e-mail password) Leave Voice Mail on Server, alt-l, This option will leave your voice mail messages on your server. OK, This option will save your settings and you will be returned to the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. This option may be activated with the space bar or enter key. Cancel, This option will abandon your changes and return you to the 1-Step Audio Publisher program. This option may be activated with the space bar or enter key. Help Menu The help menu, alt-h, will allow you to receive a listing of all the hot keys available within the 1-Step Audio Publisher and register your program. Your options include: Shortcut Keys, s or F1 Online Registration, o or F9 Register, F10 About Info, a We will now explore each of these option sin detail: Shortcut Keys, s or F1, This option will give you a list of all the hot keys which may be used to access the 1-Step Audio Publisher as well as a short description of the hot key function. Online Registration, o or F9, This option will allow you to create an encrypted e-mail to the 1- Step Audio Publisher team, thereby registering your copy of the 1-Step Audio Publisher. Within a short period of time, you will receive an e-mail which will contain your user name and registration code for your program. If one or more of the fields do not apply to you, simply place n/a in the field. The following information is requested and can be accessed via the appropriate hot keys or through the use of the tab key. All information received through this form is used for accounting purposes only and will never be sold to a third party. Your privacy is guaranteed. First name, alt-f Last name, alt-l Street, alt-s City, alt-c State / Province, alt-t Country, alt-c Code, alt-c Phone, alt-p E-Mail, alt-e Card Type, use your cursor key to select visa or MasterCard and then tab from the field. Name on the Card Card Number Expiration OK, This option will send the encrypted e-mail. Cancel, This option will cancel the registration process. Registration, r or F10, Once you receive your name and authorization code via return e-mail, you will use this menu to input the information. Simply place your name in the first edit field and your registration code in the second, tab to OK and you will be a registered user of the 1-Step Audio Publisher! About, a, This option will tell you a bit about the 1-Step Audio Publisher, who it is registered to and who created this innovative product for use on the Internet.
