Proper Settings for ALL U.S. Robotics Modems This file will show the proper settings for USR High Speed modems (14.4 to 28.8). This will also describe how to setup your USR modem so that you will connect properly everytime you call your favorite bbs. Now even simpler with enhanced detail! The Big Guy SysOp - H.H.L. SYSTEMS BBS Node 1 - 204-897-0751 Node 2 - 204-895-0534 ---------- U.S. ROBOTICS MODEM SETTINGS v1.2 Here are the easy settings for ALL USR High-Speed modems. (14.4 - 28.8) Some people were having trouble understanding the previous version so I have (greatly) simplified the directions & made it so that (nearly) anybody can get through this without any problems. DISCLAIMER: The only thing this file is guaranteed to do is take up a small amount of space on your system. None of the commands can damage your modem. Any command entered can be changed back if it causes any problems whatsoever. I do not take any responsibility for anybody using these instructions in the extreemly rare case that something goes wrong with your system. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!! You may wish to have this printed so that you can follow the proceedures step by step. LETS GET STARTED.... I have listed the "proper" setting & then explained how to change any settings after the listing. NOTE: You do NOT have to change a setting if yours is the same. Only change the settings that differ from yours. NOTE: You should be in the "Terminal" window of your Communications Program to check, display & correct any incorrect settings. ATZ : Type this first to load the NVRAM Defaults ATi4 : Type this to display the settings Compare your settings to these listed below. I have NOT included all the settings as some are not pertinent & are fine by default. The following settings are the only ones you should need to compare & correct. B0 C1 E1 F1 M1 Q0 V1 X7 : X4 for the USR Sportster BAUD=57600 : Should be set at 57,600 for all v.34 modems 38,400 for USR Couriers & 19,200 for 14.4 Sportsters This is changed in your software & not by the modem. Check your Communications program setup for this. DIAL=HUNT : Unless you have a pulse dial telephone, this should be set to "Hunt". (AT T is the command) &A3 &B1 &C1 &D2 &H1 &I0 &K1 &M4 &N0 &R2 &S0 &X0 &Y1 S11=045 : All other "S" registers can stay at the default NOTE: I have added a more detailed list of these commands at the end of this file. HOW TO CHANGE THE SETTINGS.... Note: If you're running a Sportster, make sure dip switch 7 is in the "OFF" position. If any of these settings are NOT shown in your ATi4 settings, don't worry. It just means they're not used by your modem. PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE MAKING CHANGES! Go to the "Terminal" window of your communications program. Type ATZ to reset the defaults, type ATI4 to see the settings. All the settings should be the same as listed above. If they're different, you can change yours by typing AT plus the correct setting. ie: if your setting is B1, you would type AT B0 You should receive an "OK" after pressing enter. To change an ampersand (&) command, you would type AT &A3 To change Dial type to tone (Hunt), you would type AT T The only "S" register that needs to be changed is S11. You would change this by typing AT S11=45 Fax settings are not listed & are fine by default. After changing all the appropriate settings (for example) in the form AT S11=45 &A3 B0 , then type AT &W to write the new settings to the NVRAM. You can always go back & change any settings later if needed. Type ATZ again & then type ATI4 to see the new settings & compare your new setting with the ones listed above. If this doesn't work & the changes were NOT saved (it should if you follow this correctly) you have done something incorrectly or you have a second template loaded in your modems settings. This can be disabled by switching dipswitch 7 (on the sportster) to the opposite position. Once you've determined that the settings have been saved properly. You SHOULD then CHANGE your communications software initialization string to ATZ & these settings will be loaded each time you start your comm. program thus eliminating the need for all those long redundant init strings. DETAILED SETTINGS (What these silly things mean) B0 - Handshake v32/v32bis mode enabled C1 - Transmitter Enabled (make sure this is C1) E1 - Command Mode Echo On F1 - Local Echo (Full Duplex) Off M1 - Speaker On until carrier established Q0 - Display Result codes V1 - Verbal Result codes X7 - Extended Result codes (X4 for Sportsters) &A3 - Display all result (connection) codes &B1 - Fixed serial port rate (set by communications program) &C1 - Normal Carrier Detect &D2 - DTR (Data Terminal Ready) Normal Operation &H1 - Transmit Hardware Flow Control (CTS) ON &I0 - Receive Flow Control (Software) Off &K1 - Data Compression (Auto) &M4 - Normal / ARQ (Error Correcting) Mode &N0 - Link Rate variable (with other end) &R2 - Receive Data Flow Control (RTS) ON &S0 - Data Send Ready (DSR) ON &X0 - Synchronous Transmit Clock DTE setting (Courier Only) &Y1 - Destructive Break Handling S11=045 - Duration of delay (ms) between dialed tones (faster dialing) This should help you get a perfect connection everytime you call your favorite bbs or on-line service.
